Mary Sorensen is a professional musician who has been teaching for over 20 years and performing throughout her entire life. She has taught private music lessons since 1985, and has served as the Director of Contemporary Music at Holy Cross Lutheran Church since 2002.

The daughter of a piano teacher and choir director, Mary developed a love of music at a very early age. Her first instrument was the piano, and in elementary school she picked up the flute as well. By age 11 she had added the guitar to her repertoire, beginning with acoustic guitar and then adding electric two years later.

Mary attended Booker T. Washington High School for Performing and Visual Arts, graduating as Valedictorian of her class. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies and Orchestration from the University of North Texas, with emphases in arranging and performance. During her undergraduate years, Mary performed in the UNT Jazz Singers as a featured soloist. She toured throughout Europe as a performer, and has continued performing and teaching music ever since. A highlight was her time spent at Cedar Valley College, where she taught voice for 14 semesters, and also continued her own education with two years of Audio Engineering coursework.

Mary enjoys working with students of all ages and ability levels. She primarily teaches voice lessons, but also enjoys teaching guitar and piano up through the intermediate level.
