Dawn Wilson is a gifted and talented musician from Silver Spring, Maryland, who currently works as a middle school band director in Alexandria, Virginia. She completed her Bachelor of Music Education degree at Grambling State University (Louisiana) in 2010, then went on to earn a Master of Music Education degree from Howard University (Washington, D.C.) in 2014. 

Dawn began playing the trumpet when she was 10 years old and has not stopped since! She also plays the cornet, flugelhorn, piccolo trumpet, and teaches brass instruments to young aspiring musicians. 

In addition to teaching middle school band, Ms. Wilson is very active in her community, teaching private lessons, group music lessons, and performing in numerous music ensembles. She currently performs with the NOVA Concert Band in Alexandria, VA, the Sanctified Symphony Orchestra of Alfred Street Baptist Church, the Washington D.C. Go-Go Symphony, and the DC Strings Orchestra. 

Ms. Wilson participated in numerous ensembles throughout her years of secondary, undergraduate, and graduate education. Her achievements and talent have earned her several musicianship awards and scholarships. Dawn was an active member of the Jazz Ensemble, Concert Band, Symphonic Orchestra, and the Marching Band at both of her collegiate institutions. In April 2009, she became the first African American woman to earn the Conrad Hutchinson Award for Outstanding Musicianship at Grambling State University. 

Ms. Wilson’s professional affiliations include membership in Tau Beta Sigma, National Honorary Band Sorority, Inc., Sigma Alpha Iota, International Music Fraternity for Women, and the National Association for Music Educators (NAfME). She represented Howard University in the HBCU Band Director's Consortium for two consecutive years while in graduate school. In 2013 and 2014, Ms. Wilson also earned the privilege of traveling to Vienna, Austria, and Siena, Italy, to study music and perform chamber repertoire for two consecutive summers through Howard University. The following September in 2015, she was invited to teach music at the police academy in Abu Dhabi, UAE. 

Dawn has been so blessed to perform with and share the stage with renowned jazz artists such as Benny Golson, Hugh Masekela, Roy Hargrove, Tom Browne, Javon Jackson, Hubert Laws, Sonny Fortune, Marion Meadows, Marcus Johnson, Mike Vax, Jimmy Owens, and Doc Severinsen. 

In addition to these remarkable opportunities, Ms. Wilson was selected as a participant for the Trumpet Seminar at the Chosen Vale Center for Advanced Music Studies in New Hampshire for June 2014. She also received the HBCU NAMM Scholarship to attend the Conn-Selmer Institute in Mishawaka, Indiana, in June 2014. Prior to graduating from Howard University, she was one of 4 selected recipients (out of 60 applicants) to earn the prestigious Women Band Director's International (WBDI) Scholarship. Ms. Wilson was also awarded the Gladys Stone Wright Scholarship in December 2013. 

In the future, Dawn aspires to earn a Doctoral degree in Music and become a college music professor. Ms. Wilson’s ultimate goal is to inspire her students through music and to be a music ambassador for each one of them.
