Li Zheng, member of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and the Maryland State Music Teachers Association (MSMTA), was born in China, and grew up in a musical family. When she was 4 years old, she started learning piano and music theory from her grandmother, a famous singer, and her father, a famous composer. Ever since she was young, her interest was in teaching music, so that she can help those who love music and want to learn about it. In 1991, Li was introduced to a famous opera singer, Zizheng Yu, who later on became the dean of the music education department at Nanjing Normal University in China, and Li became his student. In that same year, she met Dr. Hongduo Chen, who is now a doctoral supervisor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and she became his piano and composition student. In 1993, Li passed into Nanjing Normal University to study music education, specializing in piano; she graduated with excellent grades.

After graduation, Li became a full-time music teacher in a public high school in Nanjing. During her school teaching, she gained a high reputation among local music educators. She also taught countless private piano students. Many of her students were not only able to pass national piano tests at all levels with great scores, but many also won different local and national piano competitions. For her excellent teaching work, she was awarded the distinction ‘Outstanding Young Piano Teacher’.

Li came to the United States in 2006 and continued her teaching career as a private piano teacher. She joined the professional music teachers’ associations, MTNA and MSMTA, in 2008. With a solid music educational background and rich teaching experience, she quickly adapted to the characteristics of American education. She has taught over 100 students in the U.S. and helped many of them pass ABRSM piano exams from grade 3 to grade 8. Her teaching area is not limited to piano playing, but also includes music theory, music appreciation, ear-training and sight-singing as well as music composition.

With over 20 years of teaching, good communication with her students has always been one of the most important aspects of Li’s teaching. She not only listens to her students’ music, but also listens to their thoughts, feelings, and concerns when playing music. She cares about and is patient with all of her students and pays a great deal of attention to each of them. She hopes that with her effort, her students will not only master the notes but also understand and appreciate the beauty of music.
