Young Ik Jang

Accomplished guitarist Young Ik Jang has been pursuing his passion for music throughout his entire life. He first learned piano at the age of four, switching his focus to classical guitar at age ten. Deciding to pursue music as his career, he studied formally at the Yewon Art School in South Korea. Young Ik performed in recitals throughout his attendance at Yewon, winning first prize at the Seoul Baroque Competition under the guidance of Peabody Conservatory alum Byeong-woo Lee. Thanks to Mr. Lee's sagacious advice, Young Ik decided to study abroad in the United States, and attended Idyllwild Arts Academy in Idyllwild, California, where he studied classical guitar under Kenton Youngstrom. Young Ik later received a scholarship to the prestigious Peabody Conservatory in the studio of Julian Gray, pursuing his Bachelor of Music. He went on to earn his Master of Music while serving as a Teaching Assistant.

Young Ik made his performance debut at the Mainstay's Charlie Byrd Memorial Scholarship series in Rock Hall, Maryland, and has since performed at a variety of music festivals throughout Maryland, New York, Virginia, and Washington D.C. He won second prize at the Edwin H. & Leigh W. Schadt String Competition in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He is also internationally renowned, having received an invitation to Sungshin Women's University in South Korea as a guest artist.

In addition to his solo performances, Young Ik is also an active ensemble participant. His guitar quartet performed and received positive acknowledgement at the Guitar Foundation of America in the New York Regional Symposium in 2012 and 2014. His quartet also won the “Small Ensemble showcase” competition at Guitar Foundation of America in Denver, Colorado in 2016.

Young Ik is also an active participant in the field of composition. He performed an original composition at Peabody Conservatory's Computer Music Consort in 2014. Beginning in 2012 he also worked as a film scoring engineer in the South Korean film industry, with several hit films to his name including ‘Ode to My Father,’ ‘The Face Reader,’ ‘Perfect Number,’ and ‘The Neighbors.’

Young Ik offers guitar lessons to students of all ages and skill levels. When he is not teaching lessons, Young Ik remains active as a composer and performs as a soloist and chamber artist. He has been an active member of Phoenix Arts Management since 2014, and is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree in Musical Arts at Shenandoah University with a full scholarship and a Teaching Assistant position.
