D.C.-based South Korean cellist Byung "Brian" Kim hails from Potomac, Maryland. Currently a B.M. and B.M.E. candidate at the University of Maryland, Kim studies with Eric Kutz and David Teie (National Symphony Orchestra). Previously, Kim received private instruction under retired University of Illinois professor, Laurien Laufman, National Symphony Orchestra’s assistant principal cellist, Glenn Garlick, Dr. Tanya Anisimova, and Lori Barnet.

Kim began his musical studies in South Korea at the age of eight and carried his passion for music making to the United States. Recognized for his artistic talent in his youth, Kim won the Silver Prize at the International Music Competition (South Korea) in 2005 hosted by the International Arts and Cultural Exchange Association.

Since his immigration in 2006, Kim has had the opportunity to participate as a student musician and fellow at the Bowdoin International Music Festival, Brevard Music Center, Miami Music Festival, Innsbrook Institute, California Summer Music, and Intensive Chamber Music Seminar at Moss Art Center (Blacksburg, VA) to study with cellists Andrés Díaz, David Ying, Felix Wang, Irene Sharp, and members of the Vermeer, Ying, Shanghai and Calidore quartets.

Kim was a member of the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestra, a founding member of the Young Artists of America at Strathmore, and annual local/state level ensembles where he continuously held principal positions. At a collegiate level, Kim took part in University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra, Brevard Music Center Orchestra, Miami Music Festival Symphony, and the Avanti Orchestra of Friday Morning Music Club as a principal and section cellist.

Recipient and winner of numerous local/state/national competitions, scholarships, and other honors, Kim had the opportunities to perform at renowned venues such as the Millenium Stage at the Kennedy Center (D.C), Strathmore (MD), Moss Art Center (VA), Adrienne Arsht Center (FL), Green Music Center (CA), and Weill Recital Hall at the Carnegie Hall (NY). His success has led to invitation to participate in masterclasses with renown artists Janos Starker, Darett Adkins, Peter Wiley, Amit Peled, Andrés Díaz, and the members of the Guarneri, Pacifica, and Calder quartets.

Kim proudly plays on a contemporary cello made by Seattle-based luthier, Jason Starkie.
